Chamomile

The name Chamomile or Camomile can refer to any of several distinct species in the sunflower family (Asteraceae) like German Chamomile, Roman Chamomile, Stinking Chamomile etc. It is one of the oldest garden herbs which is known to possess amazing medicinal properties.

Chamomile has been prescribed for adults and children by doctors for the last thousand years or more. The herb is often used for sleeplessness; anxiety, gastrointestinal conditions such as upset stomach, gas, and diarrhea. It is also used to treat skin conditions and mouth ulcers resulting from cancer treatment. The flowering tops of the chamomile plant are used to make teas, liquid extracts, capsules, or tablets. The herb can also be applied to the skin as a cream or an ointment, or used as a mouth rinse.

Chamomile soothes inflammation both internally and externally. Internally, inflammation is the cause of many gastrointestinal complaints, such as heartburn, diverticular disorders, and inflammatory bowel disease. It acts to soothe the smooth muscles lining the digestive tract, relieving irritable symptoms. When applied externally as ointments etc., chamomile cures mild burns, including sunburn, rashes, sores and even eye inflammation.

Camomile has anti-inflammatory and anti-allergenic properties that make it suitable to be used as a herbal remedy for skin allergies. It effectively reduces common allergy symptoms like itching and skin rashes caused due to food allergy, pet allergy or other types of allergies.

However, people who are allergic to hayfever should refrain from using chamomile, because it is a member of the ragweed family, which may cause an allergic reaction.
